Deerfield / Breakfast Club
[edit]Hi Shsilver- I noticed you undid my change regarding the Breakfast Club closing scene, saying it was an unsourced claim. Do you have a suggestion for where I could get a source on that? A Squidoo article hardly seems like an authoritative source, but if you simply want some external validation, here's a couple articles revealed by a quick Google search:
http://www.squidoo DOT com/thebreakfastclub (Wikipedia blocks this from being posted as a hyperlink) http://fip.wiki109.org/Fun+Facts+about+Deerfield
Also, here are two YouTube clips that clearly show that the field is not Glenbrook North's field (which is widely known to be the Ferrari pick-up location from Ferris Bueller). As you will see, the scorer's booth at the top of the grandstand looks completely different (just for starters).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv1I4q6lOpo&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78MN43IOBdE
Of all the pages that claim otherwise (typically claiming the field belonged to Glenbrook North, Maine North, or Maine South), none offer conclusive evidence or even eyewitness sources. All are from fan sites or other Wiki pages (including imdb), and none cite any kind of definitive media source. The movie was obviously filmed about 25 years ago, so I couldn't find any online articles about it in the Deerfield press.
Of course, to me and anyone who attended the school, it's quite obvious. However, I can certainly appreciate the desire to be vigilant about referencing sources. Please let me know what you'd suggest.

Worldcon GoHs
[edit]A no consensus close is always an option, but I didn't feel it was the right option there. Debates at XfD are always attended by a tiny minority of interested editors. That's why they aren't supposed to be a vote, but instead to be closed based on the arguments and the relevant policies and guidelines. There seemed to be better ways to present the information to readers based on the guidance at Wikipedia:Overcategorization and the comments at the CFD. The information fitted nicely into List of Worldcons, and Worldcon wasn't so large that it couldn't have been included there if that was preferred, or even on a separate list. Of course, I could be wrong. It's not unusual... Angus McLellan (Talk) 15:47, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Advent (publisher)
[edit]While I greatly appreciate the yeoman work you've been doing on fandom-related articles, I am dubious about removing Advent from the SF Fans category. This is a classic example of a project born within fandom, for fannish purposes. Just because it became semi-legit, does not mean it ceased to be fannish. --Orange Mike 13:25, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Everleigh club copyright violation
[edit]Hi, I noticed that you work a lot on the article group Everleigh Club, Minna Everleigh and Ada Everleigh. I just saw that a big chunk of the latter two articles is a copyright violation from PBS, added by an anonymous user. I didn't want to jump in, thinking that maybe you can better coordinate the three articles and rephrase whatever is important from the offending paragraphs. Cheers, AxelBoldt 14:11, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Your edit of Derrial Book
[edit]Just curious, but I added a bit of history to the Derrial Book Wikipedia page, which you then removed saying it was interpretive. I believe it was a statement of fact, not an interpretation. In fact earlier in the same page he is identified as a Christian of some type. Later in the page this is done again in a different way. They type of Christianity he espouses is unknown, clearly we have no clue if he is Catholic or Protestant based on his exchanges with other characters, but to deny that "there is a Christian influence to his character" seems absurd. Heck I wasn't trying to inject my beliefs into the page, just to clarify that he came from an Abbey (those are typically associated with Catholics), used a Bible (obviously of Judeo-Christian origin) and referred to the Christian messages of the Bible (clearly the New Testament, which is the Christian portion of the Bible). Hence, there is clearly a Christian influence to his character. Statement of fact, not interpretation.
- You are still making assumptions about how Book interprets Christian teachings. Whedon very deliberately kept the details about what a "Shepherd" does or believes ambiguous. Your bald assertion added nothing useful to the article. --Orange Mike 17:01, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
- Based on the edit history, it is Melensdad and I left my explanation on User talk:Melensdad, which is similar to what Orange Mike wrote.Shsilver 17:09, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Everleigh Club
[edit]Well, no. Everything and anything is part of and/or influenced Chicago's culture. My view is that there are a very few things that define Chicagoans culturally, and that the rest will just get the category deleted if anyone puts it up for CfD. The category was used as a catch-all by people due to a lack of suitable categories. Speciate 21:01, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Literary collaborations
[edit]Hi Shsilver, I notice you have removed this category that I created yesterday from some of the articles I added it to, including Flora Eldershaw who was one of the main reasons I created this category. You also removed it from Charmian Clift...and others. Can you please tell me why? Sterry2607 23:46, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- Okey doke. I'm disappointed that you didn't discuss it with me first as I did think about the issue you've raised and felt the one heading could cover both. However, your point is a fair enough one, particularly given the number of articles that can be flagged with this category, so I think the best thing is to create a second heading for the collaborators as I've suggested on the Literary Collaboration talk page. I'll go ahead and do that, and reflag all the ones you removed from my initial category. I appreciate that it's difficult to manage these discussions when we are in different time zones, particularly when one is keen to get going on a task. I hope you agree with having two categories. Regards Sterry2607 04:52, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't notice that you had created it already. Thanks for that Sterry2607 00:00, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit]If you are online you can make the first edit at Lincoln Towing Service. Make one similar to the first one at South side (Chicago) last week with a similar edit summary.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 00:09, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
- I am telling you this because many people like to keep track of articles that they created. Since it was your nominee, if you start it before I get around to it you can be the creator as you should be.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 00:12, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't see much more to add to Lincoln Towing Service. If you think we might do better spending the rest of the week on the runner up you can make the change at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/COTW/Current. Since according to the WP:CHICOTW rules, you are the only person with the power to make such a decision it is your choice. You have until the end of the day (UTC). If you think there may be more info out there on this private company we can stick with it.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:31, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know how to add much more myself. If you think others may be able to help then keep it. We have certainly had worse WP:CHICOTW improvements. I know I could add a lot more to the runner up now, but every winner has the right to command attention for a whole week. It is your call. I will be disappointed if the rest of the week is wasted, but there is no demand that the article be changed.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 18:42, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
- It's too late now for us to give another article justice. We'll just let it ride.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 02:02, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Reviewed content
[edit]I am trying to figure out how to rearrange the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chicago#Reviewed_content section now that we are finding so many articles that have been WP:FA and WP:GA for a long time. I was thinking about three options.
- Just include the newly discovered articles in the alphabetical list. (the old way)
- Include the newly discovered articles both in the alphabetical list and in a separate newly discovered list. (the new way)
- Rearrange the new articles list to be listed by date the article was promoted within WP:CHICAGO instead of the WP promotion date (see here). What do you think?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 20:33, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Filking
[edit]Actually, it was Smbrinich whom I thought might be making an assumption of bad faith (for some reason, he also deleted some comments, but I don't suppose that matters now). That said, I think you'll find the ideal is in asserting notability via signficant coverage independent and reliable, secondary sources; the two are closely related, and a lack of the latter does open a question about the former.
Anyhow, it's done with now. Cheers. --Mark H Wilkinson (t, c) 16:28, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Northern Exposure
[edit]Once Rob Morrow left Northern Exposure, he did not return. He gave notice before the sixth season and they wrote him out in a lengthy story arc that lasted until about the seventh episode from the end. The series finale, the episode called "Tranquillity Base" was a single episode and not originally intended as a series finale. It was slightly re-edited (and Morrow did not appear in it) once they found out they they had not been picked up for a seventh season. Shsilver 16:46, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
- Are you sure about that? I clearly remember Morrow appearing in the finale. The last shot was of him on the Long Island ferry... this was after he and Maggie went on the trek through the woods, met Adam, continued for a bit, then he parted the trees and walked through. Then, later, he sends her a postcard from NY. Or maybe that actually wasn't the final episode? (I haven't seen it since 1995). The Parsnip!
- Positive. Watched all of them earlier this year. The final episode is set in Maurice's lodge and ends with Maggie showing up and hooking up with Chris Stevens after she decided not to go off to visit Mike Monroe.Shsilver 16:54, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I'm glad I was able to work it into the review--I received a copy when it came out but it kept getting pushed to the end of the queue until it was too late to do a regular review. White City
[edit]If you want to find images, I see some are available at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html I searched for "White City" Chicago. See the images at Chicago Race Riot of 1919 to see how to credit these images for those before 1923. Also, add community area and South Side and incorporate into the respective articles as appropriate. Also, is there any way to link this White City to the reference at http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/1386.html ? The encyclopedia of Chicago might have some other articles that mention White City in a constructive way.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 16:27, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Nebula dating conventions
[edit]I now see that there is a bit of inconsistency with regards to Nebula dating. The book to which you refer, Cauldron, was actually published in 2007, but the award will be given in 2009. Although the Nebula web site sometimes refers to it as a 2008 award and at other times refers to it as an award "presented in 2009" see example here: [2], Locus categorizes it as a 2009 award [3] for two reasons:
1) to keep it consistent with other SF awards, so that a 2008 Hugo winner is also a 2008 Nebula winner, and so on [4], and
2) because both sites (Worlds Without End and Locus) use the presentation year as their point of reference for categorization.
Would it be more valid, in your opinion, if the referenced sites said "awards presented in 2009" instead of "2009 awards"? --Icowrich (talk) 02:48, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Correction of serious misinformation in James Braid article
[edit]Hi, I have requested that the title for the article on James Braid be changed from the inappropriate, misleading, and historically incorrect current title of James Braid (physician) to the appropriate and historically correct title of James Braid (surgeon).
On the basis that you have contributed to the current article in some way, I thought that you should know that the article will be moving within 7 days from James Braid (physician) to the appropriate and correct title of James Braid (surgeon) unless there is widespread, informed, and fact-based objections.
It would be helpful if you could express your support for the correction of what seems to have been, originally, an inadvertent error, at site of the discussion of proposal. Thanks, in anticipation . . . Lindsay658 (talk) 09:36, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

I wonder whether Dickie Sullivan's role in Duck Soup as 2nd Judge was an in-joke, since his father was the original Judge in Trial by Jury. I doubt we'll ever know. It does seem likely to me that Groucho must have known of Dickie's connection to his uncle Arthur. You are now a Reviewer
[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:09, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Shsilver - I se you undidn my edit to this article. Any reason why mention of the urban myth isn't acceptable? Surely, given how widespread the myth seems tol be, WP has some form of duty to tell people that it's just a myth and has no truth. Grutness...wha? 06:06, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
- I can't see how refuting an urban myth in one sentence can be seen as giving undue weight to it. The myth is widely held; the aim of Wikipedia is to provide factual information for our readers. By failing to say that a widely held myth is false, we are failing in the aims of Wikipedia. Indeed, to deliberately ignore the myth is to indulge in far greater POV than to report its falsity. If you check WP:NPOV's section on undue weight, it states that " It is important to clarify that articles should not give minority views as much or as detailed a description as more widely held views" (italics in original. I hardly think that giving this myth one or two sentences in the midst of several paragraphs on the real origin of the flag is giving this myth anywhere near as much or as detailed a description. Grutness...wha? 23:07, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Jean Baptiste Point du Sable
[edit]Hi. I'm trying to get the Jean Baptiste Point du Sable article up to good article level. Can you think of anything else that it needs? One thing that I would like to get into the 'legacy and honors' section is something of how the African American community felt that Point du Sable was ignored by the City of Chicago, and the campaign to get him recognized as the city founder—I'm having difficulty working out how to write this and compiling sources though. —Jeremy (talk) 03:01, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
- The problem with writing anything about Point du Sable is that fact and fiction have become blurred. As far as I can tell the only historical record of Point du Sable's wife is the record of the blessing of their marriage at Cahokia in 1788—here she is called Catherine, which I agree is obviously not her birth name. The name Kittihawa and the story of how Point du Sable met her comes from Shirley Graham's 1953 novel, which the author freely admits within the book is a work of her imagination—unfortunately many websites and articles report the tales from this book as factual.—Jeremy (talk) 04:18, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Morey Amsterdam date of death
[edit]Hi Shsilver, I undid your edit on Morey Amsterdam regarding the date of death. The article Bite Me (novel) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- non-notable per WP:BK
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 20:36, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
Nomination of Bite Me (novel) for deletion
[edit]A discussion has begun about whether the article Bite Me (novel), which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bite Me (novel) until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.
You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 00:24, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
Mythological setting
[edit]I added the new cat to Thespis (opera) and The Grand Duke. What about Iolanthe? The Libretto says that Act I is set in "An Arcadian Landscape". Iolanthe says that she lives at the bottom of a stream to be near her son, Strephon, who is an "Arcadian shepherd" However, the peers come by, so maybe we're just in a suburb of London called "Arcadia"? I'm going to add it. Take it out if you disagree. Happy editing! -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:27, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

I run an alternate history blog called Alternate History Weekly Update, it is a place where I and a couple of other contributors share alternate history news and essays with our growing audience. I did a small peice on the Sidewise Awards sometime ago and my contributor Kier Salmon will be writing a post on the awards ceremony this year. I would, however, love to get a chance to interview a Sidewise judge to learn more about the awards and get an insight into how the winners are chosen. You can see some examples of my interviews here. If you are willing to be interviewed, feel free to contact me at ahwupdate@gmail.com. Thanks, and I hope to hear from you soon. Image source problem with File:AnnieMoore.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:AnnieMoore.jpg.
This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:19, 24 November 2011 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 20:19, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Derivation of nom de plume "Murray Leinster"
[edit]Hi, there. I do a fair amount of editing on articles involving the Irish FitzGerald dynasty, among whom were the Dukes of Leinster. Do you happen to know of any source on how William Fitzgerald Jenkins chose the nom de plume Murray Leinster? My hunch is that it has something to do with the Dukes of Leinster, and thus with his middle name, since some of his other pen names are minor variations on his birth name, so "Leinster" as a stand-in for "Fitzgerald" would fit his habitual pattern. If any such information exists, I'd be interested to help add it to his article. As you created the Murray Leinster article, and maintain a website on him, you seem to be the logical person to ask.
Many thanks, Rinne na dTrosc (talk) 18:33, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Nora Jemisin.jpg
[edit]A tag has been placed on File:Nora Jemisin.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [5], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:
- state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
- add the relevant copyright tag.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Opinion request
[edit]Hello colleague,
I am interested in the Middle Ages too.
I created Category:Medieval civilizations which is part of Category:Civilizations by time. The former is nominated for deletion and at the moment the vote is 2:0 in favor of deletion. I am used to deletions, but this time I am stunned. I do not believe there is no place for such a category. I believe that most people with interest in history would agree that civilizations existed in the Middle Ages. I ask people to contribute their opinion to the discussion.
